Game Of Thrones: The Long Night, Avengers: Endgame, Tribeca Film Festival – IP 150

It’s official- good things happen in April and this past weekend was proof positive with two of the most anticipated pop culture events of the year- the Game of Thrones epic white walker showdown and Avengers: Endgame. Somehow, we handled (survived) all of the epic pop culture offerings this weekend and have thoughts, questions and predictions! (Warning: This episode contains spoilers for Game of Thrones, but NOT Avengers)

We start off with our reactions to the epic third episode of Game of Thrones  and one of the most surprising and satisfying Stark moves of the entire series! We chat about the suspense, horror and action filled 87 minute journey that took us on a fire and icy ride through Winterfell. Plus, we pour some out for those who didn’t make it and try to predict what will happen next.

Then, Sean tries to discuss Avengers: Endgame without spoiling anything for Amita. We discuss what it was like to avoid spoilers all weekend and how it may have been easier than expected.

Plus, Sean attended a few screenings at the 2019 Tribeca Film Festival and gives his take on the new Wu-Tang Clan doc series, Of Mics and Men and a new Naomi Watts and Octavia Spencer film called Luce.

And in the Big Sell, Amita reviews the 2019 playlist from our podcast friends JoJCast and sells Sean on an interesting essay from Vulture about pop plagiarism.

SAG and PGA Awards, Black Mirror, Loving, Missy Elliott, Nile Rodgers, MILCK – IP 61

Awards season is in high gear and we have the latest winners from the Screen Actors Guild Awards and the Producers Guild Awards!
We discuss the outspoken SAG winners who took the opportunity to speak out on current events in unique and inspirational ways and Sean gets on his soap box about appreciating films regardless of awards recognition.

Then, we bring back our Late to the Party segment and talk about our delayed appreciation of Black Mirror and the films Loving and Kubo and the Two Strings. Amita also shares why Hell or High Water was not worth her wait.

Also, we celebrate our love for Missy Elliott and her new video, I’m Better.

And once again we return to Sean’s House Of Hyperbole and hear about his experience sitting front row at his musical hero, Nile Rodgers, recent concert.

Finally, Sean gives Amita his review of last week’s Big Sell, and introduces his Big Sell- jazz singer, Abbey Lincoln.

Big Sell 30 Day 18: Rationale

Hey all! Amita here with today’s Big Sell. The #BigSell30 has kept me on my pop culture toes this month! We hope it’s been fun for all of you to experience one piece of pop culture every day for 30 days too.

If there was a prize for trying to combine a bunch of Big Sells and make a Super Big Sell- I think this might qualify! 🙂 Take some Black Excellence, with a dash of British influence, (inspired by our fellow British podcasters JoJCast) initially discovered on my Spotify Daily Mix and one of his tracks qualifies as a Super Short Song!

As I mentioned before, I have been enjoying my Daily Mixes from Spotify and three of my mixes have usually been pretty straight forward – one is mostly mainstream pop, one is hip-hop/rap and one is Soul/R&B. But the 4th Mix is a great mix of mostly unknown artists that Spotify curated just for me and it’s where I found today’s Big Sell- Zimbabwe-born British singer-songwriter, Rationale.

I instantly felt David Bowie, Tracy Chapman, Sade, INXS, James Blake and so many more vibes from Rationale. He came out with an EP last year and the song I heard in my Daily Mix was Fast Lane“. It’s a great mid-tempo song, but his voice is something else. It has such depth and soul and I had to listen to more. The next single I became obsessed with is the title cut, Fuel to the Fire” which is an emotional song that has some 80’s influences with a modern pop feeling. The music video is captivating and a perfect compliment to his powerful lyrics- check it out here. I’m also enjoying “The Re.Up” and his latest singles “Palms” and “Something For Nothing”. (Yes I named basically all of his tracks and I don’t care- I fell in LOVE with all of his music!)

As you can see, I became obsessed and started to do some more research to find more info about him. Here’s the skinny on Rationale: He is 32, loves to dance and also produces all of his own music. He did an interview explaining why he called himself Rationale and the reason seems like it’s kismet that I found him for #BigSell30:

L: Why choose the word “rationale” in particular?

R: I had a job in a charity call centre and the boss told us: “Today we’re going to be selling stuff, make sure you get an extra £1 out of people as it’s for charity. Give them an introduction and a hard sell, then, once you’ve got their attention, give them the rationale.” That word stuck with me.

Hard Sell- Big Sell…it’s meant to be! He already has a few notable fans- Pharrell, Justin Timberlake and Elton John have all praised him over the last year and his full album release is scheduled for next spring. He is officially saved on my Spotify and I KNOW that Sean is going love him. I can’t wait for all of you to listen- mark my words and remember his name, he is going to blow up very soon in the states and you can thank me later.

Big Sell 30 Day 3: Spotify’s new “Daily Mix” Playlist

It’s Day 3 of the Big Sell 30 Day Challenge! We’re inviting everyone to join us and attempt to experience something new in pop culture once a day for 30 days. To help you out, we’ll tweet out and post suggestions here on our website.

We’ll be alternating who is giving the Big Sell over the next few weeks as well as featuring Big Sells from some of our favorite fellow podcasters and hopefully from listeners too!

Today, it’s Amita’s turn!

Hey y’all! My Big Sell is a new Spotify playlist called Daily Mix.

For those of you who know us, we love Spotify and we love their curated playlists! First there was Discover Weekly– the playlist that chooses artists and tracks that are similar to the music that you’re listening to that week and creates a new playlist filled with new talent. Then, a couple months ago they debuted the Release Radar playlist which is a list of new music released over the past few weeks with artists you listen to along with new discoveries based on your listening history (I promise that we aren’t paid or sponsored by Spotify, but if anyone wants to put in a good word for us…we’re BIG fans)

Just these two weekly playlists have introduced us to new artists and also new or re-released tracks from some of our favorite artists and we have been obsessed with both!

So, when I opened up my Spotify last week and went into “Your Library” I was greeted by a new category called Your Daily Mix. It was like the Spotify gods were working overtime and said- releasing Discover Weekly on Mondays and Release Radar on Fridays isn’t enough! We need to give the people more!

Here’s a screenshot of Daily Mix today:

You can see that I have 4 daily mixes and every day, they will change and adapt to what I’m listening to. It’s amazing and I’m excited to see what they do next to read my musical mind!

Definitely check out your personalized Daily Mix and find some new music and relive some old classics as well.

And don’t forget to let us know what you think of it!! Leave a comment here or tweet us @popinsiders. And also make sure to tell us how your #BigSell30 Challenge is going!
